Description: After producing several operas in Hamburg, in association and in competition with Mattheson, Handel and Keiser, Schieferdecker succeeded Buxtehude in Lübeck in 1709 where he also continued the latter's tradition (and invention) of Abendmusik - operatic style sacred works performed in churches and financed by local contributions. These, Schieferdecker's only surviving cantatas, will help identify how he continued Buxtehude's Abendmusiken and how he advanced it stylistically since none of his own Abendmusik compositions have survived. German-English texts. Klaus Mertens (baritone), Jan Kobow (tenor), Hamburger Ratsmusik; Simone Eckert.
