Description: This "musical drama" of 1911, set in Paris at the beginning of the French Revolution, was Kienzl's first full-scale opera since the failure of his Don Quixote in 1898 (itself the successor to the work by which his name remains known at all - Der Evangelimann). In it, he returned to his operatic strengths - namely theatrical effectiveness and use of folk material. Not live but made in a studio for radio broadcast, the sound is far better than you would expect for this date: clear, reasonable dynamic range and no distortion. 2 CDs. No libretto. Anny Felbermayer (soprano), Fritz Sperlbauer (tenor), Walter Berry (bass-baritone), Tonk√ľnstler Chor, Large Orchestra of the Austrian Radio; Wilhelm Loibner (Vienna, 1951).
