Description: If you don't know the music of Muscovite composer Alexander Tchaikovsky, you'll be delighted by this 26-minute, single-movement symphony from 2008. Commissioned for the 60th anniversary (more or less, apparently) of the end of World War II, it is quite tonal and often extremely consonant and melodic (sounds of cuckoos and woodpeckers representing the peace soon to be disturbed by Shostakovichian sounds of war), with a solo viola part for the artist who commissioned it (Yuri Bashmet) and evocative use of a wordless choir (at one point sounding like a piece from a new Star Trek soundtrack). Nimrod Guez (viola), Rafal Bartminsky (tenor), Bavarian Radio Chorus and Orchestra; Mariss Jansons.
