Description: These works are typical of Denyer's music of the past few decades; subtle, evocative and elusive, but by no means abstract. Through the use of very soft, muted instrumental sounds, whispering voices and imitations of natural noises (water, thunder, animal and bird cries), Denyer conjures a fragile yet rich world which vividly reflects the real one, as though through the medium of memory, or ritual. Very little of what is heard here is 'music' in any conventional sense; occasionally a fragment of melody drifts by - a distant memory of a fireside song heard in childhood, perhaps, or music overheard from a distance (the use of offstage performers, with the diffused, softened sound that this implies, is important in several of the works here). Instrumental and vocal material relies on delicate timbral shadings or microtonal intervals, when they rise above breath sounds and natural rustlings at all. Strangely resonant and capable of evoking surprisingly personal and emotionally charged imagery. The Barton Workshop.
