Description: Tovey's while the half-hour long Thuille (1902), in its second CD recording, is a powerfully original piece in which dark Romantic lyricism is spiced with harmonies which look ahead to the musical upheaval about to commence due to Schoenberg and others. Tovey's work is interesting not only for its instrumentation (it was written in 1912 during a holiday at Casals' summer home on the Mediterranean where his girlfriend of the time, Guilhermina Suggia was also staying and the work was a present for his hosts) and for its lovely Brahmsian first movement, second movement variations on a Catalan folk song and contrapuntal finale, but also for the fact that, apparently, Casals caught Tovey and Suggia playing the Catalonian version of "hide the salami".
