Description: The second new recording of this opera in a year (we didn't offer the first, on Telarc) after a long dry spell. As with Debussy's Pelleas et Mélisande, the mysterious and evocative libretto is by the symbolist Maeterlinck. With limited action, the opera centers on the psychological relationship between the characters, particularly between Blubeard and his new wife, who is determined to uncover and understand his past and her willingness to stand up for herself and fight and refuse to cave weakly to her husband's threats makes her, in 1907, a proto-feminist heroine. Her role requires great stamina, as Ariane remains on stage singing for almost the entire opera. 2 CDs. French-English libretto. Deborah Polaski (soprano), Jane Henschel (contralto), Kwangchul Yeun (bass), Slovak Philharmonic Choir, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra; Bertrand de Billy.
