Description: The viola is the instrument of remembrance, melancholy, as the note-writer here puts it of "the dying away to silence or nothingness" and all of that is present in this very attractive program. You will know what to expect from Holst and Alwyn, of course. Maconchy is as concentrated in her motivic working and contrapuntal writing as she is in her string quartets, McCabe (in an early work, 1962) shows his affinity with Karl Amadeus Hartmann (see also below) in almost every way, including his title while Matthews alludes very lightly to two Schubert songs in his lovely concertino (his brother is the "avant-garde" Matthews!). Sarah-Jane Bradley (viola), Orchestra Nova; George Vass.
