JÓN LEIFS (1899-1968): Edda, Part II: The Lives of the Gods, Op. 42.
Catalogue Number: 06U009
Format: SACD hybrid
Description: Like the recording of Part I of Leif’s epic work (11J003 in November 2007), created, in his own words, “in protest against Wagner, who so grossly misunderstood the Nordic character and the artistic heritage of the North” this release follows the first-ever performance of the music last March in Reykjavík. Lasting 64 minutes, this is in six parts: “Odin”, “Sons of Odin”, “Goddesses”, “Valkyries”, “Norns” and “Warriors”. Craggy, magnificent and highly individual, this work was finished in May of 1966 (Part I dates from 1939). And, although Part III - Twilight of the Gods was left unfinished, we may yet hear it in this long-running series from BIS since there are 212 pages of the full score in existence (although we can only hope it won’t be another 11-and-a-half years before that happens). Icelandic-English texts. Hanna Dóra Sturludóttir (mezzo), Elmar Gilbertsson (tenor), Kristinn Sigmundsson (bass), Schola cantorum, Iceland Symphony Orchestra; Hermann Bäumer.
