Description: The 1948 Seventh, the last of Brian’s truly large-scale symphonies (four movements taken here in 38:11 but 42:15 in Charles Mackerras’ 1966 EMI recording, nla), was inspired by Goethe’s autobiographical account of his time as a student in Strasbourg. No. 16 (1960) is a characteristically tough single-movement structure (15:19 here; 17:41 in Myer Fredman’s 1973 Lyrita recording), teeming with contrasting material of granitic strength, as well as intricacy of texture.
