Description: Looking for a bracing dose of Soviet “new music” along the lines of Denisov, Gubaidulina, Artyomov, Silvestrov, etc.? Look elsewhere! Everything here is utterly tonal, melodic and completely approachable, with Kikta’s first concerto using folk materials from its eponymous region and his third an ode to the oboe’s pastoral heritage (“Pastoral Idyll”, “Song of the Blissful Night” and “A Masked Ball”), Rubtsov almost neo-romantic in his relaxed and tuneful concerto while the Mari composer Eshpai (you may remember some of his orchestral music from Russian Disc days in the 1990s) uses both folk music styles and jazz elements in his 1982 concerto which won him the Lenin Prize two years later. Maria Sournatcheva (oboe), Göttingen Symphony Orchestra; Christoph-Mathias Mueller.
