ULVI CEMAL ERKIN (1906-1972): Symphony No. 2, Violin Concerto, Köçekçe - Dance Rhapsody.
Catalogue Number: 06R009
Description: Lovers of the authentically exotic will cotton to these Turkish works written between 1942 and 1948. The passacaglia-like slow movement of the symphony, on a theme reminiscent of a prayer from a dervish ceremony and the lyrical slow movement of the concerto with its Pachelbel Canon bass line are merely resting points for the orchestral players. Almost everything else is fast, percussive and LOUD, especially the Dance Rhapsody and the last movement of the symphony, both making use of köçek dances collected from all parts of Turkey. James Buswell (violin), Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra; Theodore Kuchar.
