Description: Probably only the second recording of the first violin sonata, written when Thuille was 19 and dedicated to his teacher Rheinberger, it shows the latter's influences and Thuille's friend, Richard Strauss. A fellow early work is the 1885 piano trio, an amiably rambling work of 38 minutes. The two mature works are characterized by a more concentrated working of themes, the cello sonata of 1901-02 particularly striking, whose dark Romantic lyricism is spiced with harmonies which look ahead to the musical upheaval about to commence due to Schoenberg and others. 2 CDs. Mark Gothoni (violin), Ulrich Eichenauer (viola), Peter Hörr (cello), Frank-Immo Zichner (piano).
