Description: Choosing items from all over the Dutch composer's career, we have an 18-year-old's suite in Mendelssohn and Schumann style, a 17-minute set of variations from 1885 that is markedly Brahmsian, the 1904 Romances which allude to Romanticism in Roentgen's mature style and, most importantly, the ten-movement Outdoors of 1919. The latter is a 24-minute suite which uses Dutch folk music in an homage to similar pieces by Roentgen's former friend and colleague Grieg. Mark Anderson (piano).
