HENDRIK ANDRIESSEN (1892-1981): Symphonic Works, Vol. 3 - Symphony No. 3, Symphonie Concertante, Chantecler Overture.

Description: The four-movement, 25-minute Third Symphony dates from 1946 and the dark days of the war seem to still cling to the first (Ouverture) and third (Sarabande) movements while the Sonata and Fuga finale are brighter and bustling. The Symphonie concertante (1962 and 22 minutes long) doesn't list solo instruments because it's really what most composers call a "Concerto for Orchestra" with two slow-fast movements sandwiching a theme-and-variations slow movement whose eight variations are "in the Old Style" of 18th century dances. The vivid, six-minute Chantecler (1972) is inspired by Edmond Rostand's famous late 19th century play and is in the genre of what the English would call the "Comedy Overture".
