Description: Unpretentious and unironic, Sainsbury writes unabashedly 'popular' miniatures, beautifully crafted in a thoroughly tonal idiom. These delightful pieces display a fondness for gently swaying, undulating ostinati, derived from Latin dance forms or barcarolles, as in the Tangos and the gently, affectionately sensuous Cuban Dances, which immediately recall Lecuona. Elsewhere the composer exhibits a very Gershwinesque gift for blues-inflected melody. The set of characterful Moments musicaux include sinuous melodies and the 'exotic' flavor of Scott's Lotus Land, and pieces that resemble Gershwin and, in sporadic episodes of dramatic bravura, Rachmaninov. Lionel Sainsbury (piano).
