Description: Master of the Queen's Music from 1975 until his death, Williamson was one of the more prolfic composers of the English-speaking world and that included more than a few organ works (how many organ symphonies written in England can you think of from the 20th century?). Strikingly powerful in its originality (Williamson perfected his organ technique in order to study Messiaen's works which have a significant influence on many of his own pieces, especially in the 1961 Vision of Christ, commissioned for the new organ of rebuilt Coventry Cathedral), eclectic in its mix of styles, this music ranges from lyrical introspection to dazzling virtuosity, both extremes well covered in the big 1960 symphony. Tom Winpenny (Harrison & Harrison organ of St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol).
