PETER MENNIN (1923-1983): Piano Sonata, 5 Pieces, NORMAN LLOYD (1909-1980): Piano Sonata, 5 Episodes, 5 Pieces for Dance, 3 Scenes from Memory.
Catalogue Number: 06P076
Description: Mennin's Pieces (1949) are in the form of a baroque suite wit toccata-like odd-numbered movements and slow, lyrical even-numbered ones which build to powerful climaxes. His sonata of 1963 is of much sterner stuff, harsher, more dissonant with freely chromantic linear writing which is almost atonal. Lloyd's pieces are much more approachable, two of them meant for beginning and intermediate-stage pianists with his 1958 sonata, polytonal, rhythmically accented and tense, the most ambitious of his compositions for the piano. Myron Silberstein (piano).
