Description: Gouvy's three flute Serenades date from 1888-91 (the third one is in a single-movement and it's unknown whether there were meant to be more). The first two are in four movements each and Gouvy has managed throughout to avoid the expectations of facile pastoral pretty-colorism the genre's name can imply. The slow movements are heart-felt and there is genuine weight of utterance in the first movements with the true relaxation saved for scherzos and finales, which overflow with good cheer. Markus Brönnimann (flute), Kreisler Quartet, Ilka Emmert (double bass), Michael Kleiser (piano).
