Description: The 1934-35 Partita is a 32-minute, four-movement suite in neo-classical (or given the immediate echoes of Bach at its beginning, a neo-baroque) style employing elaborate polyphonic artistry and individually colored harmonies, fitting in with much of the vigorous, sometimes dark and hard-edged music dating from continental Europe at the time. Jochum performed it both before and after the war with the Berlin PO. The post-war concerto (1953) is more dissonant, more expressionistic, still subtly invoking the influence of Bach in its "Ouverture", "Aria", "Finale" sequence of movements. Good, meaty stuff, looking both backward and forward. Kirill Troussov (violin), Staatskapelle Weimar; José Serebrier.
