MICHAEL JARRELL (b.1958): Cassandre.
Catalogue Number: 06K114
Description: Jarrell's retelling of the story of Cassandra, the Trojan priestess gifted with prophecy but condemned not to be believed sets a monologue in the voice of the title character, acted, not sung. The text, by Christa Wolf, tells the story of the Trojan war in retrospect, as memory, as Cassandra looks back on her fate and waits for death. As the vocal part is not 'musical' in nature - meaning neither pitched nor metrically related to the ensemble material - the music functions by defining the sense of time and atmosphere, with some passages suspended and formless, others reiterating structural material in evolving timbral coloration, suggesting a cyclicity, a sense that the evolving drama has already happened. In fact, as the composer says, the entire work 'is one long coda'. Full libretto and translation included. French-English libretto. Astrid Bas (actress), Ensemble intercontemporain; Susanna Mälkki.
