ARIBERT REIMANN (b.1936): Cantus for Clarinet and Orchestra, Olleas for Soprano, Solo for Clarinet, ... ni una sombra for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano, Arietta for Basset Clarinet.
Catalogue Number: 06K113
Description: The clarinet concerto Cantus evokes singing, the renowned opera and song composer's lifelong passion, and like the other works here it occupies nocturnal territory of Romantic-poetical gloom and unease. The solo line, flexible and melancholy, is frequently shadowed by other instrumental groups or soloists in a nightmare game of tag. Reimann's vocabulary is characteristically at or beyond the fringes of tonality, with much inventive and varied orchestration including some extended technique. The unaccompanied Heine settings are continuous melismas, soaring melodies free of tonal centers other than by implication through emphasis and reiteration. The trio sets texts of Rückert and Antonio Porchia, and here the voice and clarinet lines seem interchangeable, with spare (often extended technique) interjections from the piano. No texts. Jörg Widmann (clarinets), Mojca Erdmann (soprano), Axel Bauni (piano), Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra; Peter Rundel.
