Description: The Kagel is a piece of music theater 'about' the process of performing a piece of music; rather than keeping what goes on in the 'composer's workshop' private, in a sense, this piece presents nothing but that. So we hear snatches of what could be music from earlier traditions, what might be rehearsal falling apart or not yet co-ordinated fully by the conductor, and dramatic interjections of actual original music, either commenting on, or being commented upon by, the surrounding material. Posadas' piece is an attempt to suggest the process of anamorphic technique in visual imagery - essentially a controlled distortion of perspective - in music. The relationships between frequencies are subjected to mathematical definition and their relationships then changed in a manner somewhat analogous to perspective manipulation; as the composer admits, this 'does not produce the clear result that can be found in visual perception', but the sonic textures are nonetheless intriguing and unusual. Schönberg Ensemble; Reinbert de Leeuw.
