Description: Rangström's "lyric scena" of 1939 is the big work here, a 23-minute setting of poetry dealing with an Eastern mystical search (whether Hindu or Buddhist) which has an ecstatic yearning that the composer clothes in opulent late Romantic music with suggestions of Richard Strauss and Mahler. Madetoja's six-song cycle is urgent, time running out, the long Northern darkness coming... this 1930 piece, orchestrated in 1940, is less Gallic and more Germanic than much of his earlier music. Palmgren's eight minutes are of a less personal, though no less attractive late Romanticism. Swedish/Finnish-English texts. Camilla Nylund (soprano), Munich Radio Orchestra; Ulf Schirmer.
