Description: The earlier of these sets (1854 and dedicated to Ferdinand David) combines virtuoso demands with assured artistic quality and, unlike, say, Paganini, each has a descriptive title: Le Staccato, Alla Saltarella, Le Chant du Bivouac and so on. The later set is from 1863, contains only tempo indications and uses a second violin which, in four etudes, has plenty to do while being, oddly, almost unnecessary in the others.
