Description: The Ensor suite of 1928 may be Alpaerts\' best-known work since it\'s been recorded before on several occasion. A combination of Impressionism and Expressionism (the second movement - "Skeletons fighting for the body of a hanged man" uses a soloistic xylophone throughout), it was a milepost in Alpaert\'s stylistic progression as the 1924 Pallieter, a three-movement symphonic poem based on a popular Flemish novel, is firmly anchored in French Impressionism and is a very colorful and enjoyable way to spend half an hour (Summer Idyll is of the same type although composed in the same year as the Ensor suite). Guido de Neve (violin), Flemish Radio Orchestra; Michel Tabachnik.
