Description: With another valuable release in their "Poland Abroad" series, EDA brings us two tone-poems for large orchestra from 1905 (Fitelberg) and 1911 (Morawski) which seethe with the excitement and experimentation rife in Europe at the time and, as importantly, representing a conscious attempt to model "future Polish music" on a more abstract and less folk-oriented basis. Present-day Polish musicologists are beginning to recognize Morawski as just as important in Polish 20th century music history as Szymanowski and the long booklet notes need to be read by anyone interested in this country and this period. The Poème by Laks (1954), survivor of Auschwitz, is a moving requiem for Poland and Polish Jews and Tansman's homage (1969) uses a musical version of "Erasme" to derive its motifs in music of bright, clear austerity. Klaudyna Schulze-Broniewska (violin), Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt; Jürgen Bruns.
