ERWIN SCHULHOFF (1894-1942): Piano Concerto, Op. 11, Der Bürger als Edelmann for Piano. 7 Winds and Percussion.

Description: Written around 1913, the Three movement, 28-minute concerto is lean and springy, without eschewing virtuoso attitude and the piano writing shows absolutely no indication to monumentalism, indulging in lively dexterity, weightlessly soaring passages and unchecked delight in performance. The 24 minutes of music from a 1926 Prague staging of Molière's play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme is far removed from this and well into Schulhoff's jazz and popular music period where, with the prominence of piano and trumpet, the composer most often called to mind is Shostakovich.
