Description: Infectious rhythms and lyrical cantabile passages appear throughout Sutermeister’s compositions, often suggesting comparisons with Honegger or Poulenc or Milhaud. The dramatic suite (1940) this Swiss composer drew from his first Shakespearean operatic success (and best known of his works) shows his serious side but the easy-going charm the Divertimento (1959-60) and Aubade (1978-79) are not far from “Light Music” while his deeply felt response to the Swiss landscape (1946-48) can be felt even with the presence of a speaker. I know, this is poison to most collectors but there’s so much likeable music on this disc that you ought to overlook it. At 87:11, another packed-full release from this valuable label. German-English texts. Bruno Cathomas (speaker), Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Rainer Held.
