Description: The conflict between Christianity and the older pagan religion animates this 1876 opera, one of only two stage works by the composer. The notes suggest Meyerbeer and German Singspiel as the major influences while Opera Grove compares the work’s lyricism and dramatic intensity to Bellini. Both agree, though, that there is no Wagnerian influence (at least not musically) and that Ölander’s orchestration is rich and colorful. 2 CDs. No libretto.
