Description: Written by a teenage Bartók in 1898, this four-movement, 29-minute work shows the composer having mastered Brahms’ rhythmic characteristics, thematic processes and chamber textures completely. Before his career-changing encounters with folk music, Bartók was on his way to being a German composer - and a good one too. A warm and gorgeous piece which, like the similarly early Dohnányi piece (Dohnányi was only 14 when he produced it and it speaks the language of Brahms, Schumann and Schubert but never sounds like a pastiche; first recorded by Hungaroton in 2003), will be balm to the souls of Late Romantic collectors. Notos Quartet.
