GIAN FRANCESCO MALIPIERO (1882-1973): Sinfonia degli eroi*, Ditirambo tragico*, Armenia*, Dai sepolcri*, Grottesco. * - World Premiere Recordings.
Catalogue Number: 05Q009
Description: Malipiero's earliest symphony is the 18-minute "Symphony of Heroes" of 1905, a single-movement work which seems to waver between positive and negative forces, the composer's mature style already suggested by its rugged chromaticism and stabbing dissonances and passing modal flavors. The other big piece is the 18:31 Dai sepolcri of 1904, the earliest known original work by the composer which seems intended as a call to imitate the deeds of great ancestors through the memorials left them by their tombs. The other two premieres are the eight-minute Grottesco (1918), music for an avant-garde stage production and the 4:30 Armenia of 1917 which has nothing to do with the contemporaneous genocide but is a softly melodic weaving together of four Armenian folk songs.
