World Premiere Dvorák Opera!ANTONÍN DVORÁK (1841-1904): Alfred.
Catalogue Number: 05Q006
Reference: UP 0140-2 612
Description: The main reason why Dvorák's first opera was never recorded and not even performed until 1938 is probably that it set a German libretto and, in 1870, patriotic Czechs were only interested in hearing operas by Czech composers in their own language. The libretto is by the famous German poet Karl Theodor Körner and concerns English king Alfred the Great and his battles against Viking attackers. Dvorák scholar David R. Beveridge notes that it "contains many passages of breath-taking beauty" and "its faults reflect neither feeble dramatic talent nor lack of experience so much as unfettered invention and almost wild imagination." 2 CDs. Libretto and translation on a track of each CD as well as on-line.. Petra Froese (soprano), Ferdinand von Bothmer (tenor), Felix Rumpf (baritone), Peter Mikulás (bass), Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra; Heiko Mathias Förster.
