NAJI HAKIM (b.1955): Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra, Violin Sonata, Capriccio and Salve Regina for Violin and Organ, Fantasia on Edvard Munch's "Unge mennesker på stranden" for Solo Violin.
Catalogue Number: 05P095
Label: Acte Préalable
Description: The 2000 sonata is on the short side (17 min.) and the 2002 concerto on the long side (34 min.) but both are packed with tunes. The sonata is basically a violin version of Hakim's 3 Noëls for chorus - multiple Christmas songs from France and Germany while the concerto casts its net wider: material from the German baroque, Latvian folklore, another self-borrowing (from his Chant de joie for organ), Lebanese folk themes, a passage in aksak rhythm... the tunes just keep on coming. Of the shorter pieces, the nine-minute Capriccio is about as much fun as a violin and an organ can have. Agnieszka Marucha (violin), Naji Hakim (organ, piano), Zenon Brzewski Warsaw String Orchestra; Andrzej Gebski.
