Description: With its persistent rhythmic drive and robust physicality, Turnage's music naturally suggests itself for dance purposes. UNDANCE was a three-way collaboration with a visual artist and a choreographer, and was constructed using references from Richard Serra, Edweard Muybridge, and computer modeling for the stage action. Separated from the visual aspects of the dance, the music consists of eight short, characterful pieces alternating fast and rhythmic and slower intertwinings and interactions. The earlier Crying Out Loud has also been used in dance; somewhat harder-edged, with more jazz influence, the piece constantly sets insistent meters against each other. Strongly tonal, the harmony is more pungent, less clear than the later UNDANCE. No Let Up is in a similar idiom - the works were written a year apart - but makes greatsr use of repeated motifs, lending a more obsessive, stubbornly aggressive quality to the music's lively rhythmic motion.
