NIGEL WESTLAKE (b.1958): Compassion for Voice and Orchestra.

Description: This 'Symphony of Songs', broadly speaking, falls into the much abused, infrequently wholly successful 'crossover' category, having been conceived as an orchestral work based around the distinctive voice of the Israeli-Australian singer-songwriter Lior Attar. The texts are traditional Hebrew and Arabic poems, proverbs and prayers, combined around the idea of the nobler human impulses, peace and the compassion of the work's title. Westlake's experience as a film composer lends instant accessibility to his style, which is very tonal, here inflected with middle-eastern modalities and ornamentation related to the vocal style implied by the texts. The work as a whole combines a popular fluency and liveliness of expression with a genuine neo-romantic gravitas and dramatic sweep. Texts and translations included. Lior (vocals), Sydney Symphony Orchestra; Nigel Westlake.
