MODEST MUSSORGSKY (1839-1881): Sorochintsi Fair (compl. & orch. Vissarion Shebalin [1902-1963]).
Catalogue Number: 05P049
Label: Brilliant Classics
Description: Begun in 1874, left incomplete at the composer's death, extant in four subsequent versions, the last of which, edited by Pavel Lamm and completed by Shebalin, is the one recorded here, this peasant comedy was a "number opera" set in Ukraine and using Ukrainian folk music speech-patterns in the recitatives. The libretto itself is as complicated as the history of the work but Malcolm MacDonald's note makes everything as clear as one can. Would have been nice to have at least a synopsis but the music is very attractive even if you don't know what's going on. 2 CDs. No libretto. Hermann Kuklin (bass), Svetlana Zalizniak (mezzo), Nadezhda Ryzhkova (soprano), Chorus and Orchestra of the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera Theatre of Russia; Evgeny Brazhnik. Original 1998 URAL publication.
