Description: Payne entertainingly recounts how he was ambushed by the principal of the RAM and robbed of five months of composition time to render this version of the Bruckner in the spirit of Schoenberg's Society for Private Musical Performance. The forces are slightly larger than the latter used: pairs of violins and violas, cello, bass, flute, oboe, pairs of clarinets and bassoons, three horns, trumpet, trombone, timpani, piano and harmonium. Oddly it's not Payne but conductor Pinnock who tells us that all available versions of the symphony were consulted and used for what I guess you could call a "hybrid SPMP version".
