Description: Wagner put aside work on Lohengrin in the 1840s to prepare and conduct this revision of Gluck's opera (premiered in 1847). The libretto was translated into German, some characters were reduced or eliminated as was almost all of the ballet music, recitative, aria and arioso were sculpted into a Wagnerian through-composed form, added wind instruments and composed the wind parts anew, making them a useful tool for dramatizing desperation, pain and suffering without altering the basic string writing. This is the first recording of Wagner's complete work (although we are not told what's missing from, say, Kurt Eichhorn's 1974 Eurodisc recording - in fact, almost every performance of the opera in German used Wagner's version until the modern era). The period instruments and period pitch add to the authenticity of this recording. 2 CDs. German libretto. Camilla Nylund (soprano), Michelle Breedt (mezzo), Christian Elsner (tenor), Oliver Zwarg (bass), Chorus Musicus Köln, Das Neue Orchester; Christoph Spering.
