Description: This sole opera by a very obscure Italian, probably from Rome, was the first opera to be produced in the southern Netherlands, in Brussels in 1650 on the occasion of the wedding of Philip IV of Spain and Maria Anna of Austria. In the Venetian style of Monteverdi's last opera and of Carissimi's mid-century operas, Ulisse was extravagantly expensive to mount, with many elaborate machines necessary for stage action and Zamponi used a much larger orchestra than would normally have been the case. Almost uniquely, a complete autograph manuscript of the work survived in the Austrian National Library which was the basis of this recording. Luxuriously packaged in a 152-page book with three separate articles and dozens of illustrations including original engravings of the set design. 2 CDs. Italian-English libretto. Céline Scheen (soprano), Furio Zanasi (baritone), Sergio Foresti (bass), Namur Chamber Choir, Clematis; Leonardo García Alarcón.
