GOFFREDO PETRASSI (1904-2003): Preludio, Aria e Finale for Cello and Piano, SANDRO FUGA (1906-1994): Cello Sonata No. 1, FRANCESCO CILEA (1866-1950): Cello Sonata in D, Op. 38.

Description: Petrassi's 1933 triptych is a cheerful example of neo-classicism with an introspective slow movement sandwiched between two brisk outer ones but the real find is Fuga's 25-minute sonata from just three years later. Calm, lyrical and with elements of modality in its first movement, followed by a Grave e sostenuto slow movement which alternates between serenity and tension, it offers a finale with an insinuating tune which makes you think now of Gershwin in Porgy mode and now of Villa-Lobos. Try getting it out of your head! Massimo Macrì (cello), Giacomo Fuga (piano).
