PHILIPPE GAUBERT (1879-1941): Violin Sonata in A, 3 Aquarelles for Piano Trio, Lamento and 3 Pièces for Cello and Piano, 4 Esquisses for Violin and Piano.
Catalogue Number: 05P006
Description: Gaubert's was a lighter, sunnier muse than Ropartz' and he preferred smaller, freer and lyrical forms to which the majority of the works here belong. Their freshness and classical spontaneity are present also in the fast movements of the 1915 sonata which, however, has a meditative, melancholic slow movement. Also standing apart from the general spirit is the fourth of the Esquisses of the same period, an ardently expressive evocation of the sea in Normandy. Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjabédian (violin), Henri Demarquette (cello), Marie-Josèphe Jude (piano).
