Description: That last title in the line-up should give you an idea of what to expect. Vleggaar's background includes rock guitar and a studio which also includes computers. But he writes his music out by hand on paper and everything is firmly based on a melodic line. Kind of a combination of the Bernstein of West Side Story, rock, jazz and bluegrass welded with the symphonic tradition, his music ranges from hyperactive (your foot will tap) to softly contemplative (the slow movement of the 2008 concerto). Ayre of Solace (2009) is freely based on John Dowland's music both in its theme of melancholy and in its now-and-again glimpsed modern equivalent of a viol consort in the orchestra. The wonderful Dead as Disco (2006) is a 12-minute catalogue of orchestral disco gestures which peters out into the hollow "bang-bang-clap" of Queen's We Will Rock You. Actually, you know who comes to mind when listening to this piece? Michael Daugherty. Gangs o' fun. Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic; Otto Tausk, Pascal Rophé (Ayre).
