Description: This young Polish string quartet make plain their intentions with the title of this disc: "Back to Melody". You'll know Orawa from its original string orchestra version (arranged here by the Indianapolis Symphony's incoming music director): music based on the high energy folk music of the Orawa highlands on the Polish-Slovak border. Everything else on the disc is also based on Polish folk music with Czarnecki's having a Hungarian flavor (Spis is a multi-cultural frontier region) and Malecki's suite also borrowing from Polish highland folk music while his unusual Andante and Allegro is a mini viola concerto with highlander music in the Allegro and Jewish-style folk music in the Andante (his daughter is the violist in this quartet). OPiUM Quartet.
