PAUL SCHOENFIELD (b.1947): Violin and Piano: 4 Souvenirs, Partita, 3 Country Fiddle Dances for Electric Violin, Percussion and Amplified Piano, Café Music for Piano Trio.
Catalogue Number: 05K093
Description: Schoenfield's infectiously likeable style is displayed to great advantage in this collection of lively miniatures. The Partita is an homage to the Baroque form, and while some movements are skilful Baroque pastiche, others are very much a contemporary composer's tribute 'in the style of'. The Souvenirs and Café Music use popular idioms in very much the way that Gershwin did, and equally sucessfully. Specifically Jewish melodic influences are here and there incorporated from his own acknowledged cultural background, alongside both cultivated and vernacular traditions from America and elsewhere. The Country Fiddle pieces are folk music not so pure and not especially simple, but energetic and highly entertaining, like everything else on this most enjoyable disc. William Terwilliger (violin), Andrew Cooperstock (piano), Matthew Bassett (percussion), Andrés Diaz (cello).
