ERWIN SCHULHOFF (1894-1942): Flute Sonata, Concertino for Flute, Viola and Double Bass, ARNOLD SCHOENBERG (1874-1951): Wind Quintet, Op. 26 (transcr. flute and piano Felix Greissle [1899-1892]).
Catalogue Number: 05K084
Description: This unusual coupling contains two attractive, generally neo-classical pieces by Schulhoff from 1925 and 1927 (one recorded in 1982, the other and the Schoenberg recorded in 1992 but with no indication that they have ever been previously issued) and the very unusual flute sonata transcription of Schoenberg's first completely dodecaphonic piece. This was made by Greissle, one of his students, in 1923-4 at Schoenberg's express invitation and the latter's insistence that everything which the flute could not play must be stuffed into the piano part makes for some very difficult playing. Fenwick Smith (flute), Mark Ludwig (viola), Edwin Barker (double bass), Sally Pinkas (piano), Randall Hodgkinson (piano - Schoenberg).
