IGNAZ PLEYEL (1757-1831): Symphonies concertantes in B Flat for Violin and Viola (Benton 112) and in A for 2 Violins (Benton 114), Violin Concerto in D (Benton 103/103A).
Catalogue Number: 05K043
Description: Pleyel's two Symphonies concertantes date from 1791 and 1792, one a two-movement work in the French manner and the other with a short slow movement added to make three. Expansive, concentrating on melody and lyricism at the expense of thematic development or manipulation, these are eminently easy on the ears. The 31-minute concerto comes from the early 1780s and exists in two versions; this recording uses the first two movements of the original version and the newer finale. David Perry (violin), Victoria Chang (viola), Isabella Lippi (second violin), Baltimore Chamber Orchestra; Markand Thakar.
