Description: Grandfather of a popular crime-fiction novelist of today (of the same name), Mankell was far from being a Romantic National composer. These are all late-period works (1922-30) and show a fascinating combination of French Impressionism (with a feeling for the stillness of nature and contemplation of time which you get in Koechlin's Heures persanes), Franck and Liszt (especially in the three Fantasy-Sonatas, each 16-17 minutes long in single-movement form) and some of the not-too-atonal harmonies of Scriabin. Exotic yet still grounded in Romanticism, Mankell certainly has his own voice which casts a subtly compelling spell that will grow on you. 2 CDs for the price of 1. Anna Christensson (piano).
