Description: Barcelonazo begins with energetic, pulsing process figuration, quite reminiscent of John Adams, and in general the composer makes use of imitative, repeated gestures as a feature of his style. The music is very tonal, the 'minimal' sections especially so. These sections alternate with sharply delineated, open-textured music, strongly suggestive of neoclassical Stravinsky. The piece exudes energy and good humor, inspired by the excitement and energy of the city that provided its title. Glimpses consists of twelve short movements, based on Lithuanian cantillation. More harmonically ambiguous than Barcelonazo, the strongly contrasting nature of the sections, some exceedingly brief and aphoristic, yet satisfyingly self-contained, provides a compelling journey through an exotic landscape, perceived only in vivid fragments. Refrains is built on repeated, though varied, material; the refrain itself is built on a fragment of Xenakis' Evryali; however the nature of the music hardly ever suggests Xenakis - the level of dissonance is far lower, for one thing - and the overall impression is of energetic pulsation and constantly evolving textures in a basically tonal medium, again with distinct Stravinskyan referents.
