RICHARD POPPLEWELL (b.1935): Organ Concertos No. 1 in D and No. 2 in F (Jane Watts [organ of the Ulster Hall], Ulster Orchestra; Sir David Willcocks), Elegy, Suite for Organ (organ of Rochester Cathedral).
Catalogue Number: 05J096

Description: These short (17 and 24 minutes) concertos use a full orchestra (none of that "strings and timpani" stuff) to present both organist and various sections of the orchestra (especially the brass!) to full sonorous advantage (although there are also moments of lovely, chamber-like scoring also). Popplewell's models were Elgar and Walton for the first and, though he uses the opening of the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 as a means of starting the second, it continues in much the same mid-20th century English vein. Lots of fun for organ/orchestra collectors.
