Description: This 40-minute one-act piece (1896) is in the idealized Renaissance genre popular with pre-Raphaelites in late 19th century Europe, its French original source was Tuscanized by Mascagni's librettist. The two characters are an aging courtesan and a young troubadour who meet one evening in a villa outside Florence and have a discussion centering on love, innocence and experience. No arias, no recitatives, just free-flowing vocal lyricism. Two versions of the prelude, one choral and one orchestral and the intermezzi from L'Amico Fritz and Cavalleria add a bit more time to the disc. Italian-English libretto. Eilana Lappalainen (soprano), Jennifer Larmore (mezzo), Acaademic Choir Zerotín, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic; Peter Tiboris.
